Social Status

Picture
The men of the Ibo village have much higher social status then the women, the women are almost like property of the men, the more you have the more respected you are.

Also, reputation is very important to men in the book.  Men do not like to be seen as being weak and they try to maintain a high reputation.

Next, the men wear ankle bracelets which signify the number of titles they have earned.

So the men gain reputation through bravery in battle, and skill at wrestling.  With the reputation they have earned from this many of the men get multiple wives.

In addition, hard work for the men is seen through the size of their yam harvests.  The more yams that they produce the more respected they are because yams are the staple crop.

The most respected men are the ones who are good in battle and at wrestling, have good yam harvests, and have multiple wives, just like Okonkwo was at the beginning at the book.
