Farming

Picture
Yams are the major produce of the Ibo village.  The yams and social status go hand in hand.  The more yams you produce, usually, the more respect you get.

Also, their culture worships the earth and its beauty so they do not take anything for granted and really respect the earth. The Ibo village respects the earth especially at the New Year and during growing season.

Next, they are an agricultural society and depend on the earth and predictable cycles of its seasons, so that is one of the reasons why they respect it so much and worship it.

The village effectively farms and uses everything that they grow, wasting little to nothing.  This shows that they truly appreciate everything the earth offers them and they don’t take it for granted.

The village tapped trees for palm wine, and they made medicine with herbs.  That shows their resourcefulness and skill for knowing the earth.

Last, the earth is not always generous.  It can be ruthless and not provide food and resources if the humans offend it.  So in the story they have to be careful to not upset the earth so it does not starve them.
